About Rubrik:

Rubrik is a leading provider of cloud data management and data security solutions, helping organisations protect, manage, and secure their critical information across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Their innovative platform simplifies data protection, ensures business continuity, and enables secure data access.

Objective:

Rubrik approached Gravit8 to create a high-energy, immersive Virtual Reality (VR) obstacle course game designed to captivate and engage audiences at multiple exhibitions throughout the year. The goal was to deliver a fun and interactive experience that showcased Rubrik’s brand while offering players a thrilling challenge to navigate a virtual course as quickly as possible.

The Big Idea:

We designed and built a fully customised VR obstacle course, suspended in a dreamy sky-high world, packed with fun, adrenaline, and a dash of mischief. It wasn’t just a race- it was a test of speed, timing, and nerve.

Crafted entirely in-house, our animation team designed a 3D environment that screamed Rubrik-branded visuals, custom assets, and obstacle designs that blended seamlessly with their identity. Think vibrant floating platforms, bold branding, and just enough peril to keep things interesting.

 

Key Features:

  • Start and finish lines to frame the action
  • Swinging arms, blocks, and hammers to avoid or bash through
  • Moving platforms to test balance and control
  • Precision jumps to cross gaps and keep the momentum going

All of it wrapped up in a comic-book inspired visual style, with gently drifting clouds to give players that surreal “above it all” feeling.

Gameplay Experience:

Players navigated the course using the joystick on their VR controllers to move, while their hands allowed them to interact with the environment – breaking through walls and pushing objects. A dedicated jump button enabled them to leap across gaps, with realistic gravity applied to add to the challenge.

In the event a player fell off the course, the screen would seamlessly fade to black and fade back in, placing them back on the track with a time penalty. This mechanic ensured smooth gameplay while subtly increasing the competitive pressure.

Audio & Visual Design: A playful, comic-inspired visual style brought the course to life, with vibrant animations and branded environments. Audio design complemented the immersive experience, featuring an ambient soundtrack during the intro screens and a more intense, energetic track during gameplay. Fun sound effects added to the excitement, enhancing interactions like breaking walls or hitting obstacles! All sounds are in world and placed relative to the player (so they sound where they are in 3D).

Results & Impact:

The VR obstacle course delivered an engaging and competitive experience that drew participants in and encouraged repeat plays. By combining branded visuals, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a compelling leaderboard system, Gravit8 successfully provided Rubrik with a standout attraction that left a lasting impression on players.

Designed for use at multiple exhibitions throughout the year, the experience not only entertained but also reinforced Rubrik’s innovative and forward-thinking brand identity.
